UT joined colleges and universities across the country to #celebratefirstgen by hosting its inaugural on-campus event.
The university has made especially noteworthy improvements in the four-year graduation rates of first-generation college students and students eligible for Pell grants.
As the first in her family to go to college, Maria Alvarez said she didn’t know what to expect when she arrived at The University of Texas at Austin. She credits programs such as the University Leadership Network with helping her gain confidence and succeed.
“I’m halfway through my goal of becoming a doctor right now, and UT was the best place for me to come,” [Garvin] said.
From wrestling competitively to riding motorcycles, Williams is drawn to action. So, it comes as no surprise that she’s preparing for a career in emergency medicine.
An economics major in the College of Liberal Arts, Castellano is the first person in his immediate family to attend and even apply to college.
